What to do when your Airbnb cleaner does not show up
If your Airbnb cleaner does not show up, call and text them within 15 minutes of the agreed start time, and if you cannot reach them, start calling your backup cleaners straight away while you begin on the essentials yourself. If the home will not be ready by check-in, tell the guest early and honestly with a specific new time rather than letting them into a home that is not clean, because Airbnb can refund that guest out of your payout. To catch a no-show sooner next time, give every turnover a set start time, confirm it the day before, and ask your cleaner to message you when they arrive.
When a cleaner does not show up, you are racing a check-in time that cannot move. The fix on the day is speed: find out early, call your backups, and clean the essentials yourself if you have to. The fix for next time is a set start time and a simple check, so you notice minutes after the clean should have started instead of when the guest is at the door. Keep our free Airbnb cleaning checklist open while you work, because whoever ends up cleaning will need it.
The hour-by-hour plan for the day
The times below count from your cleaner's agreed start time. If you never agreed one, use your checkout time, and set one next time, as explained below.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 15 minutes after the start time | Call your cleaner, then text a simple question, such as "Are you on your way to the house?" Check whether they warned you about a delay and you missed it. |
| 30 minutes after | Call once more, and try anyone they work with. If there is still no answer, stop waiting and treat the job as uncovered. |
| 30 to 60 minutes after | Work through your backup list in order, calling before you text. Give each person the address, the time the home must be ready and the pay, including any same-day extra. |
| 1 hour after | Choose your plan: a backup cleaner, you, or both together. If nobody has said yes, start on the essentials yourself while you keep calling. |
| As soon as you know the home will be late | Message your guest with an honest update and a specific new time. |
| Before the guest arrives | Walk the whole home with your checklist and take a few photos. |
| When the home is ready | Tell the guest straight away, even if it is earlier than the time you gave. |
| The next day | Talk to your cleaner about what happened, note who covered and what you paid, and update your backup list. |
If you have to clean it yourself
Clean in the order a guest will notice. Make the home usable first and leave the extras for the next turnover.
- Beds and towels. Put fresh sheets on every bed and fresh towels in every bathroom. A spare set of linens kept at the property means you are not waiting on the washer.
- Bathrooms. Clean the toilet, sink, shower and mirror, and put out toilet paper and soap.
- Kitchen. Do the dishes, wipe the counters and clear out anything the last guest left in the fridge.
- Trash. Empty every bin and put in new bags.
- Floors. Vacuum or sweep the rooms guests use most.
- A final walk. Look for hair, crumbs and forgotten belongings, then check the thermostat, lights and locks.
Airbnb's ground rules for hosts say all listings should be clean and free of health hazards before check-in. If the home needs more than you can do in the time left, a later check-in is better than handing over a home that is not ready. Our Airbnb turnover cleaning guide covers the full order of a normal turnover.
If you live far from the property
Your plan has to work by phone, so you need one local person who can let a cleaner in or check the home, such as a co-host or a trusted neighbor. A keypad code you can share and then change means a new cleaner can get in without anyone driving over.
How to message your guest honestly
Tell the guest as soon as you know the home will not be ready on time, not when they are standing at the door. Airbnb advises guests to keep messages on Airbnb so there is a record, and that works for you too.
- Say what happened in one plain sentence. "Our cleaner was not able to come today" is enough, and it blames nobody.
- Give a specific new time. "By 5:30 PM" is better than "a little later." Choose a time you can beat.
- Offer something useful. That might be a lunch recommendation while they wait, a later checkout if your calendar allows it, or a partial refund. What you offer is your decision.
If you decide to refund part of the stay, Airbnb lets you send money from the reservation before check-in ("Send or request money") and through the Resolution Center after check-in ("Send money"). Its help center asks hosts to send these refunds within 60 days after checkout. The template on this page includes a guest message you can copy.
Cleaner no-show messages: backup cleaner and guest
Build a backup list before you need it
A good backup list is short: one or two people per property who have seen the home, have agreed a rate with you and can say yes on short notice. Our guide to hiring a reliable Airbnb cleaner covers where to find people and how to vet them. For the backup list itself:
- Ask your cleaner first. They may already have someone they swap jobs with when they are sick or busy. Ask who that is, and meet them.
- Ask other hosts near you who they call when their own cleaner cancels.
- Look at Airbnb's Co-Host Network. Where it is available, including the United States and Canada, you can ask local co-hosts for individual services, and cleaning and maintenance is one of them.
- Call a local cleaning company and ask whether it takes same-day turnovers and what it charges.
- Pay for a trial clean on a day when no guest is arriving, so each backup has been inside the home before it matters.
- Agree the rate in advance, including what a same-day call costs. Our guide on how much to pay an Airbnb cleaner shows how to work out a fair rate.
- Keep one page per property with the address, entry steps, where linens and supplies are kept and a link to your checklist, ready to send once someone says yes.
- Put substitutes in writing. Agree how much notice your cleaner gives if they cannot come, and whether they may send someone else. Our Airbnb cleaner agreement template covers both.
How to catch a no-show early next time
A no-show you discover at check-in time leaves you a few minutes to recover. One you discover 15 minutes after the clean should have started leaves you most of the day.
Set a start time for every turnover
Agree a start time with your cleaner, not just a day. Put it in the job message with the address, the checkout time and the next check-in time. If a guest leaves early or you agree a late checkout, tell your cleaner straight away and agree a new start time.
Confirm, then check
- When the booking comes in, offer the job in writing and ask for a clear yes or no.
- The day before, send a short reminder with the start time. A cleaner who has double-booked still has a day to sort it out.
- On the day, ask for a quick message when they arrive, and set an alarm for 15 minutes after the start time. If the alarm goes off with no arrival message, call. That is the first step of the plan above.
Watch for early signs, too. Slow replies to job offers, a vague "should be fine" instead of a yes, or several houses booked for the same afternoon are all reasons to warn your backup a day early.
If you would rather not run these checks by hand, TurnMyRental reads your booking calendar, offers each turnover to your own cleaner by text so they can reply YES or NO, and reminds them the day before. If you add your mobile number, we text you when your cleaner starts and warn you when a turnover has not started or has no cleaner. Each step is on our how it works page, and our plans are a flat monthly price by number of properties.
Common questions
Should I cancel the Airbnb reservation if my cleaner does not show up?
Cancelling is almost never the right answer. Airbnb charges hosts 50% of the reservation amount for the nights not stayed when they cancel 48 hours or less before check-in, with a minimum fee of $50 USD, and it may also block the listing's calendar or cost you Superhost status. A cleaner not showing up is not among the examples Airbnb gives of valid reasons to cancel without those consequences. Delaying check-in and telling the guest early is usually the better choice.
Can I let the guest check in before the home is cleaned?
We do not recommend it. Airbnb's ground rules say listings should be clean before check-in, and under its rebooking and refund policy a home that is not reasonably clean and sanitary at check-in is a reservation issue. The guest can report it within 72 hours after discovering it, and if Airbnb refunds them, your payout is reduced by the amount refunded. A short, honest delay is easier to recover from.
How quickly should I tell the guest about a delay?
Tell them as soon as you know the home will not be ready on time. Close to check-in, Airbnb expects hosts to reply within 1 hour to guest messages received during local daytime hours, so keep checking your messages until the guest is inside.
Do I have to pay a cleaner who did not show up?
That depends on what you agreed. If nothing is in writing, talk to them first, because a real emergency is different from a forgotten job. Then put your notice, cancellation and substitute terms in writing for next time.
